While most believers and non believers were enjoying the peace of Christmas, Palestinian militants fired about 100 rockets and mortar shells into Israel. A rocket aimed at Israel even killed 2 Palestinians when it misfired and hit a Palestinian home.
Israel is preparing for a major offensive in response to the Palestinian terrorist attacks. You need not be surprised by what may follow after listening to the quotes coming out of Israel:
“We will not accept this situation. Whoever harms the citizens and soldiers of Israel will pay a heavy price.” — Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak
“I am telling them now, it may be the last minute, I’m telling them stop it. We are stronger.” — Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert
“Enough is enough. When there’s shooting, there’s a response. Any state would react that way.” — Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni
The unholy timing hits not only at Christmas time, but at a time when America, their closest ally changes leaders. Terrorists likely feel their best hope of getting away with such attacks are during the closing down of President Bush’s leadership and the arrival of a President they feel will be more sympathetic to their brutal ways.
Israel is facing their own elections, further complicating the matter. If the current leaders don’t properly deal with the situation, Benjamin Netanyahu will if he’s elected. Maybe the terrorist’s strategy is to invite a strong reaction from the current regime, in hopes of satisfying the Israeli citizens enough to keep out a tougher leader in Netanyahu.
The attacks come at a time when Iran is on the brink of possessing nuclear weapons as well as others. Will America stand with it’s closest ally when Barack Obama officially becomes President? It seems certain that Israel will have to respond in a big way to the attacks, both real and threatened on it’s citizens, with or without help from America.
